American Heart Association Certifies First Comprehensive Chest Pain Centers in India and Mexico

The American Heart Association has taken a significant step forward in global health by certifying the first Comprehensive Chest Pain Centers in India and Mexico. This initiative is part of a broader effort to combat cardiovascular diseases, which are the leading cause of death globally, accounting for 32% of all deaths. The certification recognizes hospitals that excel in providing timely and evidence-based care for cardiac emergencies, aiming to reduce treatment times and improve patient outcomes.

In India, where cardiovascular diseases account for approximately 36% of deaths among people aged 30 to 69, three hospitals have been certified. These include Malabar Institute of Medical Sciences Ltd (Aster MIMS) in Calicut, Apollo Hospital in Hyderabad, and MGM Medical College Hospital in Navi Mumbai. Similarly, in Mexico, where nearly a quarter of all deaths are due to cardiovascular diseases, the Unidad Médica de Alta Especialidad Hospital de Cardiología Centro Médico Nacional Siglo XXI in Mexico City has become the first certified center.

The Comprehensive Chest Pain Center Certification is the highest level of recognition by the American Heart Association, focusing on facilities that meet stringent criteria for treating severe heart attacks, such as ST-elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI). These centers are equipped to perform percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) within the critical time frames recommended by the latest guidelines, significantly improving survival rates.

This certification program is a crucial element in creating a regional system of care that aims to save lives by minimizing delays in treatment for chest pain and heart attacks. By setting high standards for cardiac emergency care, the American Heart Association is fostering healthier communities worldwide and making strides in reducing the global burden of cardiovascular diseases.
