BOXABL Unveils Conceptual ‘UFO’ Habitat for Lunar and Planetary Settlements
BOXABL introduced a conceptual off-world habitation system called the UFO (Unidentified Folding Object), designed to address challenges of transporting and deploying livable structures beyond Earth, with plans to make its intellectual property available royalty-free to spur innovation.

BOXABL, a company known for its foldable housing solutions on Earth, has unveiled a conceptual habitat system designed for future lunar and planetary settlements. The company introduced the UFO (Unidentified Folding Object), an off-world habitation system that leverages its foldable building intellectual property to enable compact launch configurations that expand into larger living spaces after deployment.
The concept was developed by an after-hours skunkworks engineering team and is intended to support future lunar and planetary settlement scenarios through modular, linkable structures that could be used for research, tourism, and support operations. The announcement was accompanied by a video titled “LIVE ON THE MOON (Part 1) — UFO by BOXABL,” which showcases the habitat’s potential deployment.
BOXABL stated it plans to make the UFO intellectual property available on a royalty-free basis to encourage broader innovation in off-world habitation systems. The company emphasized that this project remains separate from its core mission of advancing housing affordability and construction efficiency on Earth.
The company’s flagship product, the Casita, is a 361-square-foot studio unit that unfolds on-site in less than an hour. BOXABL also announced the Baby Box, a smaller 120-square-foot unit built to RV code, and is developing stackable and connectable models for larger homes. This announcement highlights the growing interest in space habitation technologies and the potential for Earth-based modular construction companies to adapt their innovations for off-world applications. By making its intellectual property available royalty-free, BOXABL aims to accelerate development in this emerging field.
