Energy Emerges as Key Metric for Effective Meetings, Survey Finds

A recent survey conducted by Funmentum Labs has uncovered a significant shift in how employees evaluate meeting effectiveness, with energy emerging as the top priority over traditional metrics like productivity and purpose. The study, which surveyed 655 U.S. knowledge workers, reveals that only one in three employees consider their meetings excellent, while less than half report feeling energized after work meetings.

The data paints a picture of a workplace in what researchers describe as a full-on energy recession, with meetings serving as ground zero for this decline. Thirty-seven percent of respondents reported feeling joyless and drained, attributing this to too many meetings that fail to produce meaningful outcomes. The problem appears most acute in government, healthcare, and manufacturing sectors, where workers rated their meetings the worst among all industries.

Perhaps most telling is the finding that just 39 percent of employees find their meetings memorable, suggesting a widespread lack of engagement and impact. The survey identified a clear disconnect between leadership and individual contributors, with 43 percent of directors and above rating their meetings as excellent compared to only 24 percent of individual contributors.

The research points to specific solutions that employees believe can reverse this trend. Fifty-three percent of respondents identified shared laughter as providing the most energy at work, while 52 percent said spontaneous creativity or humor represents the fastest way to re-energize teams. These findings challenge conventional meeting strategies that prioritize preparation and productivity over human connection and engagement.

In response to these findings, Funmentum Labs has launched Funware, an AI-powered facilitation platform designed specifically to address the energy deficit in workplace meetings. The platform functions as a built-in meeting facilitator for Zoom, transforming standard meetings into structured, engaging sessions with clear outcomes requiring zero preparation. Key features include an AI concierge that matches meeting goals with appropriate team activities, one-click meeting activities to maintain engagement, and AI personalization that tailors sessions to specific team objectives.

Mark Halvorson, co-founder and CEO of Funmentum Labs, emphasized that energy has become the new key performance indicator for meetings. The platform includes 25 proven team activities and offers custom activity design for unique team challenges, representing a new approach to meeting design that prioritizes human experience over pure efficiency metrics.

The timing of this innovation appears particularly relevant given current workplace trends. Return-to-office mandates have failed to address cultural issues, project management tools haven't restored trust, and while AI has automated tasks, it hasn't improved the human experience of work. Kenny White, co-founder of Funmentum Labs, noted that while most tools promise productivity, Funware enables better chemistry among team members.

The survey results suggest that many employees feel trapped in a repetitive cycle, with the most common description of their workday soundtrack being Groundhog Day same scene, same song, every single day. This perception underscores the need for new approaches to meeting design that can break this cycle and restore the energy that drives real organizational outcomes.
