Mars Snacking and Unreasonable Group Expand Sustainable Food Innovation with 14 New Ventures
Mars Snacking and Unreasonable Group have selected 14 innovative food technology companies to address critical sustainability challenges in the global food system, focusing on reducing emissions, scaling sustainable ingredients, and developing natural alternatives.

Mars Snacking and Unreasonable Group have welcomed fourteen new purpose-led ventures to their Unreasonable Food collaboration, marking the second cohort of companies focused on transforming the global food system. The initiative, launched in 2024, brings together entrepreneurs tackling pressing food chain challenges through innovative technologies and sustainable approaches.
The 2025 cohort represents a strategic expansion of the program's focus areas, particularly targeting dairy cattle emissions reduction, sustainable ingredient scaling, and development of natural color alternatives. Amanda Davies, Chief R&D, Procurement and Sustainability Officer for Mars Snacking, emphasized the collaborative nature of this effort, stating that addressing food system challenges requires connecting pioneering ventures with scaled industry leaders to accelerate transformation toward a more resilient future.
The selected ventures include Alpine Bio, which engineers crops to produce dairy proteins without cows, and Standing Ovation, producing animal-free casein through precision fermentation for authentic dairy textures. Oobli harnesses sweet proteins from plants to create sugar-like taste without sugar, while Debut Biotechnology and Octarine Bio focus on fermenting high-value ingredients and natural colors to replace unsustainable or synthetic sources.
Other companies in the cohort include DE3PBIO, using AI and biotech to unlock plant-based functional ingredients; NuCicer, breeding high-protein chickpea varieties resilient to climate stress; and Plantible Foods, extracting sustainable protein from duckweed to replace eggs and dairy. Hydrosome Labs leverages ultrafine bubbles to boost fermentation yields, and Pow.bio pioneers continuous fermentation technology to reduce costs and increase capacity for bio-based production.
The program builds on the success of the 2024 inaugural cohort, which reported significant impact metrics including nearly $200 million in additional revenue, 140,000 tons of CO₂e avoided, 310 million liters of water conserved, and 1.14 million kilograms of food sold. These companies reached 24 million more people with safe, nutritious food and educated 2 million people on climate change mitigation.
Daniel Epstein, CEO of Unreasonable Group, expressed honor in welcoming these entrepreneurs, noting their work reflects shared ambitions for evolving the food system sustainably and inclusively. The collective 2024 and 2025 ventures will engage with Mars teams across the enterprise, Unreasonable Food mentors, and a global investor network to further support their culture-changing work centered on transforming food supply chains and shaping the future of food.
This collaboration represents a significant step toward developing a more sustainable and nutritious food system, demonstrating how industry partnerships can accelerate innovation while addressing critical environmental challenges. The ventures' focus on practical solutions for emissions reduction, sustainable ingredient development, and natural alternatives positions them at the forefront of food system transformation.
